Saving lives through ethical suicide reporting

Suicide is an escalating public health concern in the country, with cases continuing to rise at an alarming rate.

As the media plays a critical role in shaping public perception and influencing behaviour, responsible reporting has never been more important. By highlighting stories of hope, resilience and recovery from individuals who have overcome suicidal crises, the media can contribute positively to suicide prevention efforts. Such reporting can encourage help-seeking behaviour, reduce stigma and remind vulnerable individuals that support and recovery are possible. To achieve this impact, journalists and media practitioners should adhere to the following do’s and don’ts when reporting on suicide-related issues;
